About

Amy in her powerchair nexxt to her easel with a painting of her empty powerchair

I am a contemporary artist based in Cornwall specialising in painting, drawing and printmaking. My art practice challenges society's misperception of disability, despite living in the 21st century with equality in society, there is a deficit in how disabled access is envisaged. This inspired me to express the noumenon of my experience, which refers to that which is not perceived through the senses.

I create self-portraits to showcase the divide between my physical disability and identity. The self-portraits reveal themes of emotion, movement and action. Self-portraits help to convey my strengths and vulnerabilities. Not only am I an artist, but I compete in powerchair football locally and nationally.

My preferred mediums are willow charcoal, soft pastels and gouache paint. Through the use of bold colour, monochrome and composition, I challenge the viewer to what they see, to provoke an emotional response. As a powerchair user, I show life experiences. The Strikeforce chair reveals an alternative side to me; my attempts to stand and walk reveal how I was once able to. These compositions are risky, as I show my vulnerability to a society that discriminates. Paintings such as ‘Taking Up Too Much Space’, ‘The Art of Walking’ and ‘Speaking Over Me’ is a message that fuels the issues of access, participation and raising awareness. My work involves critical self-reflection and self-analysis and taking risks by exposure in self-portraits.

I am interested in exhibiting my artwork in galleries and online exhibitions. I am available for commissioned artwork.
